Nauru’s Split Personality

Best known of Nauru’s varieties is probably the split “B” of the overprint which occurs at position 4/12, (the stamp next to the top of the imprint on the right-hand side of the sheet). The handbook indicates its occurrence on all four values but it is generally regarded as not appearing on the 2d value, as the imprint blocks of this denomination seem to show.

Though not from a positional block, the 2d in the fourth illustration appears to show the beginnings of the same flaw.

Perhaps the overprinting operations commenced with the 2d and the split developed towards the end of processing this value. Can anyone else throw light on the matter.
