Two covers bearing Morocco Agencies Jubilee sets, (one Tangier, the other Spanish currency), were recently bought at auction. The cancellations in each case were of “British Post Office Tangier / 7 am / 8 My / 35” which, on close examination, appeared to be Madame Joseph forgeries, with the “8 My” off-centre, to the right.
In the auction catalogue, the covers were described as: “.... with addr rubbed out.”, but they showed remnants of an address which would far from dispel the suspicions of forgery. When all this was reported, the auction house indicated that the covers should be returned for a refund.
Reportedly, only two sheets of each value made it to Morocco in time for the first day of issue, making it an obvious choice for the postmark forger. So, if you insist on your Moroccan Jubilee covers being F.D.C.’s, you’d be as well to check the cancellations carefully.
