Grenada Guide

This time, the colonial visit is to the spice island of Grenada. Also, its Grenadines – the island chain including the inhabited Carriacou and Petit Martinique. Again, we are indebted to John Cooper for most of the scans.

The capital is St George but there are several other postmarks to look out for ...

Sauteurs

Capital of the parish of St Patrick in the north of the main island is Sauteurs (French for “Jumpers”, referring to the native Carib Indians who leapt off a 40m cliff rather than face domination by the French).

Here is an empire rate cover of My 16 35 and, taken from another cover, a datestamp of different configuration.

Grenville

An empire letter rate cover to Canada with the 28 Oc 35 cancel of Grenville - the second largest city and capital of the large eastern parish of St Andrew.

Happy Hill

Happy Hill Anchorage is located in Flamingo Bay on the West coast of the island. This empire rate cover to Cheshire bears the date 20 Ja - presumably of 1936.

Gouyave

Known to many as the town that never sleeps, it got its name from George III’s Queen Charlotte. Today, you can still hear people refer to Gouyave as Charlotte Town. During the French control of the island, the town's name was changed to Gouyave because of the vast amount of Guava trees that were growing at the time. Here is an Aug 22 cover to Co. Limerick.

Hermitage

An empire rate cover to London, cancelled Hermitage 28 Sp 35.There is more than one Hermitage in Grenada but the postmark on this empire rate cover refers to the one in St Patrick’s parish. The reverse is backstamped Grenada GPO.

Birch Grove

A double weight empire rate cover to Scotland with the datestamp, (27 Au 35), of Birch Grove which is in the heart of the main island and encompasses several villages, including Providence, Nianganfoix and Beauregard.

Hope

This city in the parish of St Andrew provides the postmark for this Jy 20 35 example of a foreign rate cover to the USA. Backstamps are of GPO Grenada and Saint Louis (Aug 2).

Carriacou

A dependency of Grenada, this is the largest of its Grenadines. A Oc 7 35 datestamp cancels the 1˝d (empire rate) cover to Trinidad. There still is a traditional boat-building culture located in the village of Windward, on the northeastern side of the island, where Carriacou's people of Scottish and Irish ancestry are concentrated.

Woburn

Ignoring the Cayman Islands ˝d, 3d pays registration and 1˝d pays the empire letter rate on this cover to Cheshire. The 20 Ja 36 cancel is of Woburn, which is situated in the parish of St George in the south of the island.
